This week I was afforded the opportunity to attend Olympia All Sports Camp in Huntsville, Ontario Canada. It was my first time in Canada as well as working an all-sports camp. I thought I would be in a gym teaching girls basketball skills and sharing with them my experiences as a college athlete and a professional athlete for most of the day, but I was completely wrong.
At Olympia the camp director, Dave Grace, believes kids should have downtime and not just learn one sport for 6 hours a day. The kids in their down time are able to kayak, canoe, swim, rock-climb, zip-line, do creative arts and just play other sports. So in my free time I didn’t just get to enjoy the beautiful view of Muskoka lake from my cabin but I was able to canoe for the first time in my life.
The kids were great to work with. I was able to run drills and share my experiences with them. They were very inquisitive and seemed to appreciate everything that I taught them. I think the fact that they could take part in other activities and have down-time, made it easier to absorb more during the basketball sessions.
Many of the kids followed the WNBA and many aspired to play at a university or college or make their school team. I was glad that I could inspire them and share with them my story. I was able to walk around campus and get to know the girls a little better and they were able to share some of their fears and aspirations with me.
The camp counselors and other coaches that I worked with were totally awesome and very welcoming. Many of them had attended the camp and worked the camp for many years. It was nice to hear their stories about camp Olympia as well as share ideas about drills, coaching and training. Oh yea, special shout out to Coach Bill and Meagan Price, Cameron Hall, and Coach Stapleton! I learned a lot and they were awesome Eh!
This was a wonderful experience and I would encourage anyone looking for a positive camp for their kids to attend over the summer to think about Camp Olympia. Camp Olympia was awesome Eh!
Side-note most Canadians end some of their sentences with Eh during conversation so I had to put it in my blog. Wouldn’t be right without telling you guys about that Eh! Okay let me go before I wear this out Eh!
