Can Duncan lead the Spurs to it’s fifth NBA title?

Yeah I know but I'm getting my degree first

Tim Duncan told everyone early in college it didn’t matter to him if the NBA was setting up a salary cap and that  he would lose out on a lot of money. He had no plans of leaving college until he got his degree. He Did That

Last free agency Timmy, was quoted as saying “You can print this anywhere I have no plans of ever leaving the Spurs. I will retire a Spur and I will be a Spur for life” 14 years strong and he is still a Spur. He Did That

Tim Duncan, in his first college game, was held scoreless only to end up being a consensus NCAA College Player of the Year. He was drafted 1st in the 1997 draft by the Spurs, and has led them to 4 NBA titles. He Did That

A tall lanky kid that still wears the same haircut since college has emerged as one of the best power forwards if not the best in the game. He has his   14th All-defensive NBA Team 14th All NBA Team and 10x 1st team.  Two regular season MVP awards and three finals MVP awards.  HE Did That

Tim Duncan was asked to take a lesser role and let Tony Parker take over the team. Tim unlike Shaq who couldn’t do it with Kobe, handed the reigns over and with his quiet confidence still eluded that he was that Man! Still the anchor in the middle and still the reason the Spurs go as far as he goes. Despite knee injuries many said his well had run dry, but they didn’t know Timmy was drinking from the fountain of youth.  He Did That

How many players stay with a team their entire career? What star player never throws his coach under the bus and adamantly states that he trust his  coach Coach Greg Popovich 100%?  He never gets to high or to low, rarely shows emotion and  is notorious for his fierce blank stare and quiet confidence. He Did That

The Ball is in Tim's Hands now and who's gonna take it from him?

Last night Time Duncan set screens, played superb help defense, got 10 boards and 24points, and  five assist in 44 hard fought minutes. He finished the Grizzles off in overtime in the last two games with his consistency, fundamentally sound plays and his profound leadership. He has accepted his new role his declining athleticism with grace. He has taken the other two star players under his wing and before he left the court last night  gave each one of his players a hug or a high five. Who still does that?  He Did That

Timmy has been mentored by the great David Robinson, yeah remember the Admiral, there is nothing he hasn’t seen, his team and coach have extreme confidence in him. They are on a mission. Tony Parker says they all feel like it’s been to long since they have been there, the Finals. They all want one more time. Timmy is getting better with time and after defeating Memphis nothing will stop him from getting his fifth title. He Will Do That!

Coaching Not to Lose..

Can you find whose missing in this play as LBJ scores game winner.

Indiana played Miami as well defensively as any team has this season. James and Wade got into the paint but didn’t get anything easy because of  Hibbert’s presence inside. With Indiana Pacers up one with two seconds left Coach Vogel chose to take his most intimidating guy Hibbert out of the line up. Four time MVP Lebron James gets the inbound pass and without hesitation drives to the paint for an uncontested left handed lay up to seal the victory against the Pacers in overtime.

Twitter, social media, and all the non professional, non ballers, fans went crazy asking why Hibbert wasn’t on the court. When I saw the Hibbert on the bench for the final play, I simply said to myself there’s a coach coaching not to lose.

I haven’t coached and I really don’t like discussing coaches as a player but from my experience with over at least 9 different coaches in the WNBA and 11 coaches in my 14 year career overseas. I know when a coach is coaching not to lose. In my book that was the story of the decision by Indiana Coach Vogel last night in substituting Hibbert out of the game.

I don’t agree with Coach Vogel’s decision.  I believe in tatics but I also believe in the momentum of the game more. For 2 seconds I think that Hibbert could have held his own. I feel very strongly that if he were in the game Lebron wouldn’t have drove and scored. Miami may have gotten a jump shot but that would have been better than seeing an easy lay up go in.

Hibbert protecting the paint earlier in the game.

Coach Vogel as most coaches was thinking tactics and how Chris Bosh could space the floor and he didn’t want to put Hibbert in that position. Like a player wishing he could have that one shot back I’m sure Vogel would love to have that one decision back.

My first AAU coach, Skip Long told me the first rule that I needed to learn is  we don’t play not to lose we always play to win. That’s been my mentality ever since. If I ever retire from this game and get to experience coaching I will have a lot to learn but coaching not to lose won’t be one of them.

When the one thing that could stop Kobe happens………..

Last night in the fourth quarter I woke up just in time to see Kobe the Black Mamba with venom in his eyes  willing his team to victory again. Being down the entire game Kobe whom had just hit a tough fade-away  jump shot, a three pointer over a double team was heating up as usual in the 4th. I was glad I had set my alarm to witness another Kobe take over.

Kobe pumped after hitting the 3 to tie!

With less than 4 minutes on the clock he then came down and bought the fans to their feet at the Staple Center.  He rose up almost four feet in from half court, with a hand in his face and drains a three pointer from the top of the key to give the Lakers a crucial  lead in the game.

I seriously in my delirious state said to myself,  “I am officially a Kobe fan.”  I actually as much as I hate to say it cheered on that shot. Even though I was  a Laker fan for as long as 2 minutes,  I can say that I was just as sadden by what happened on the next sequence after that as any long time Laker fan.

Down by 2 Kobe gets open to get the ball again and attempts to drive to the basket. It looks as though he simply slips and falls on the play. Kobe doesn’t bounce back up though instead he’s rubbing the back of his foot. I get a queasy feeling in my stomach as I do when I see any player go down and as I saw the replay I immediately knew it was his Achilles.

I’ve seen it two too many times before. Initially with all the players I’ve seen it happen to or heard it happened to it’s the same reaction. I heard a pop and it was like somebody kicked me in the back of my foot.In Kobe’s red eye interview he said the exact same thing I’ve heard time and time before.

Kobe in pain holding his leg after falling on a drive to the basket

My friend, nor my teammates didn’t walk right afterwards and neither did Chauncy Billups  when he went down with his Achilles injury last season with the Clippers or Tamika Catchings as the list goes on and on. They say the pain is to excruciating.

For Kobe Bryant though, the initial pain caused him just to call a time out as he was sitting on the floor. He refused help to the bench as he was helped up,  but I could see the pain in his eyes and I sensed what I initially thought happened had happened.

Now what he did next is the reason I will stay a Kobe fan forever. After speaking with his trainer whom I assumed just told him your done if you can’t walk it’s serious. Kobe limps back onto the court,  head high, cool as you can be with pain in your eyes and knocks down two crucial free throws to again tie the game.  Listen healthy guys can’t even make regular free throws and he made two crucial ones on one leg.

This is not as  legendary as New York’s Willis Reed scoring 4 points in a crucial championship playoff game 7 but for me what Kobe was able to do was similar in how inspiring it was.

Some will get mad that I’m even comparing but Kobe’s two free throws did inspire his team. You could see it in their eyes. There was no way they were going to lose that game which was a crucial in keeping their playoff hopes alive. Even Dwight Howard who has struggled with his free throws all season made 1 out of 2 to give the Lakers the lead and the win with under 2 seconds left to play.

Kobe making those two free throws may still inspire the Lakers to finish what Kobe wanted most this season and that’s the Lakers to make the playoffs. If it doesn’t Kobe definitely inspired me this morning and probably many other fans last night. Kobe walking back and hitting the free throws where so many say they couldn’t even walk just exemplifies his basketball character. His fearlessness, total domination, and will to win can never be challenged. There is also no way I could never become a fan.

Injuries are a part of the game, the worst part of the game, and for Kobe Bryant hopefully it will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Prayers for a speedy recovery and even though I know how blessed I am to still be playing. Situations like these are little reminders to be grateful to play another day.

I love this game!
