When the one thing that could stop Kobe happens………..

Last night in the fourth quarter I woke up just in time to see Kobe the Black Mamba with venom in his eyes  willing his team to victory again. Being down the entire game Kobe whom had just hit a tough fade-away  jump shot, a three pointer over a double team was heating up as usual in the 4th. I was glad I had set my alarm to witness another Kobe take over.

Kobe pumped after hitting the 3 to tie!

With less than 4 minutes on the clock he then came down and bought the fans to their feet at the Staple Center.  He rose up almost four feet in from half court, with a hand in his face and drains a three pointer from the top of the key to give the Lakers a crucial  lead in the game.

I seriously in my delirious state said to myself,  “I am officially a Kobe fan.”  I actually as much as I hate to say it cheered on that shot. Even though I was  a Laker fan for as long as 2 minutes,  I can say that I was just as sadden by what happened on the next sequence after that as any long time Laker fan.

Down by 2 Kobe gets open to get the ball again and attempts to drive to the basket. It looks as though he simply slips and falls on the play. Kobe doesn’t bounce back up though instead he’s rubbing the back of his foot. I get a queasy feeling in my stomach as I do when I see any player go down and as I saw the replay I immediately knew it was his Achilles.

I’ve seen it two too many times before. Initially with all the players I’ve seen it happen to or heard it happened to it’s the same reaction. I heard a pop and it was like somebody kicked me in the back of my foot.In Kobe’s red eye interview he said the exact same thing I’ve heard time and time before.

Kobe in pain holding his leg after falling on a drive to the basket

My friend, nor my teammates didn’t walk right afterwards and neither did Chauncy Billups  when he went down with his Achilles injury last season with the Clippers or Tamika Catchings as the list goes on and on. They say the pain is to excruciating.

For Kobe Bryant though, the initial pain caused him just to call a time out as he was sitting on the floor. He refused help to the bench as he was helped up,  but I could see the pain in his eyes and I sensed what I initially thought happened had happened.

Now what he did next is the reason I will stay a Kobe fan forever. After speaking with his trainer whom I assumed just told him your done if you can’t walk it’s serious. Kobe limps back onto the court,  head high, cool as you can be with pain in your eyes and knocks down two crucial free throws to again tie the game.  Listen healthy guys can’t even make regular free throws and he made two crucial ones on one leg.

This is not as  legendary as New York’s Willis Reed scoring 4 points in a crucial championship playoff game 7 but for me what Kobe was able to do was similar in how inspiring it was.

Some will get mad that I’m even comparing but Kobe’s two free throws did inspire his team. You could see it in their eyes. There was no way they were going to lose that game which was a crucial in keeping their playoff hopes alive. Even Dwight Howard who has struggled with his free throws all season made 1 out of 2 to give the Lakers the lead and the win with under 2 seconds left to play.

Kobe making those two free throws may still inspire the Lakers to finish what Kobe wanted most this season and that’s the Lakers to make the playoffs. If it doesn’t Kobe definitely inspired me this morning and probably many other fans last night. Kobe walking back and hitting the free throws where so many say they couldn’t even walk just exemplifies his basketball character. His fearlessness, total domination, and will to win can never be challenged. There is also no way I could never become a fan.

Injuries are a part of the game, the worst part of the game, and for Kobe Bryant hopefully it will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Prayers for a speedy recovery and even though I know how blessed I am to still be playing. Situations like these are little reminders to be grateful to play another day.

I love this game!

James Fire Wade Heat NBA’s Tag Team Back Again..

Tag Team but the Replica Version

In the Heat’s last game against the Lakers Lebron James scored 30+ points and Dwayne Wade had 30+ and the tag team was to much for the Lakers to handle. Kobe played great but didn’t have anyone to tag on his roster to compete with Lebron and D-Wade in the 4th quarter.

Lebron James has been on a tear scoring 30+ points in the last five games making Heat history and also shooting an unbelievable 60 percent in field goal percentage. He has been unstoppable this season and virtually impossible to stop. Shooting 60% for most athletes usually happens playing a video game and Lebron  has made NBA history doing it.

I wrote a blog in 2010 about James bringing the Fire and Wade bringing the Heat and it seems that with the resurgence of Wade, the Fire and Heat are on the same page once again. When writing this blog this morning it was like deja vu all over again. Here’s an excerpt from that blog.

The combination of  King James  bringing the Fire and D-Wade bringing the Heat  easily transferrable on any given night is a chemical reaction that will cause a huge explosion. An explosion that can cause one of those burning flames that’s almost impossible to stop.

The Original Tag Team

The Clippers, Thunder, Celtics, Lakers, Spurs are in trouble if this Heat team remains healthy and DWade and James get any better. Yes this is still the regular season and in the playoffs teams will play harder. With that being said so will Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, and if they can play any harder, no other NBA team has a chance at winning a title.

I realize they have a few more championships to win but James and Wade’s  offensive talent and desire to play defense reminds me of another tag team duo.   That duo being Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan and yes maybe it’s a replica version in Miami but there is one undeniable comparison. When these duos are on the same page they can’t  be stopped and they don’t lose.

Fatigue a factor in NBA SuperStar Athletes?

So why has Dirk Nowitzki Dallas Mavericks Star, Dwayne Wade Miami Heat Star, Lebron James MVP of the League, Miami Heat Star, Kobe Bryant L A Laker’s star had their share of mistakes during the most critical time in the 4th quarters. Why have there been critical mistakes such as missed free throws, bad shots, and unforced turnovers?

The answer is simple because after carrying their teammates the majority of the game fatigue becomes a factor.  My former coach Kay Yow (1942-2009) always told me that you know when a great player is tired when they do one of three things

Take a horrible shot during a timely possession. Make an uncharacteristic foul . Or make a costly turnover during a critical time.

We have all seen the top athletes I mentioned earlier either do one or  two of these mistakes in pivotal games during these NBA playoffs. As an athlete you don’t have total control over how fatigue may or may not affect you. Sure you know to adjust and bend your knees and hold your follow-through on a shot as your legs get tired. But what does an athlete do when  fatigue attacks them mentally and how do they even recognize it?

We have heard a few of the stars in post-game interviews say we made some mental mistakes and we have to be mentally tougher.  Mental mistakes more often or not come from fatigue and in most cases athletes have no control over that.

I haven’t just noticed how some superstar athletes have made mistakes during the playoffs but how some may have disappeard for a play or two. They haven’t been as aggressive as they were last game or start of a quarter. That’s a fatigue factor in some cases but we don’t recognize it because mistakes aren’t being made.

We don’t notice it because the other two or three players on their teams are stepping up and being aggressive and it’s giving them a chance to regroup take a break without  going to the bench. Kevin Durant is afforded that luxury because of Harden, Westbrook and last night even Ibaka. Kevin Garnett gets that luxury because of Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, and Ray Allen. Tim Duncan gets that luxury because of Tony Parker, Leonard, Diaw, and Ginobli.

Fatigue is a factor in all sports whether we want to use it as an excuse or not. The fact is that it does play a factor in athletes even the Superstars. The only way to control it is by having a coach who recognizes it and having a great supporting cast that’s ready to step up and give valuable minutes.

Most fans want to see the Superstars win the games almost by themselves and that may happen a playoff game or two. Although with the shorten 2012 NBA season, key injuries, back-to-back playoff games fatigue becomes a major factor in the playoffs.  Even the MVP and other super-star athletes aren’t exempt from it.

So this year the team holding up the O’Brien trophy at the end of the playoffs will have to be just that a TEAM.
