“You have to beat the best teams in the end of the year because they don’t get beat by the lesser teams” Geno Auriemma Its the end of the year and the best teams in women’s college basketball are all in Denver right now. Tomorrow two of these teams will go from being in the category of the best to the category of the less.
First up Notre Dame and UConn these teams have all met up seven times the last two seasons and are very familiar with each other. This game will go down to the wire because both teams have great coaches and they know each other extremely well.
Geno has been quoted as saying he doesn’t have a star on his team and he’s surprised at how well his team has played. Geno is a great coach and even better motivator. I think all his quotes about not having a star are reverse psychology to get the most out of his players.
Muffet McGraw has star guards in Novosel and Diggins but also has a great team. A great balance of leadership in the front-court and the back-court. From a players and coaches perspective you love when your pt guard is the go to player on the team, star and leader. She also is the coach on the floor and puts everyone in the right position to score. This will be valuable tomorrow as the game will probably be a close one.
Its the Final Four so none of these teams need motivation, but Notre Dame and UConn may want some revenge as they take the court Sunday. Notre Dame still has losing to UConn in the Big East tournament championship game over a month ago on their mind. UConn remembers losing to Notre Dame in the Final Four last season and I’m sure even Maya wishes she could come back for this one.
These two teams match up well and both teams will be playing with a chip on their shoulder. Geno says the best teams beat the lesser teams at this time of the year. Tomorrow I have Notre Dame finishing as the best team and UConn finishing as the lesser team. That’s my pick that’s my preview.
